If you are a natural born speaker, then you also might have a writing career in your future. The best place for me to sell my books are the writer’s conferences that I attend and speak at. Those conferences put me in front of hundreds of writers in a given weekend.

If you are a professional speaker, then agents might be more interested in you than someone who is not. If I have two proposals side-by-side with similar content, and one writer speaks 20 times a year and the other doesn’t, then it’s a no-brainer who I will sign. I’ll sign the speaker every time.

It’s important that authors come to the table with different connections to people and places where they could sell books. Speaking engagements provide authors with this opportunity. When you have a speaking career first, and your writing is ready, you will have a much better chance at snagging an agent.
